ISLAMABAD: A total of six Pakistan boxers qualified for the last-four round across different categories after the third day’s bouts of the second Shaheed Benazir Bhutto International Boxing Tournament being held at the Liaquat Gymnasium.
In the heavyweight 91-kilogramme (kg) category, Pakistan featured in three bouts, beating Kenya 22-16 and India 8-7 in the two wins.
In the middleweight 75-kg category, Pakistan featured in two matches and won both of them. Jamal Nasir downed India’s Devanshu Jaiswal to win the bout 27-7 while Uzbekistan were also defeated 9-1.
Nasir said the challenge of beating an Indian player motivated him to do better. “I ‘m very happy after defeating Jaiswal,” Nasir told The Express Tribune. “Beating an Indian boxer was my motivation and I’m glad I succeeded.”
Pakistan tasted less success in the other categories, losing two bouts to Uzbekistan 8-1 and Mongolia 23-18 in the lightweight 64-kg event. In the 46-49-kg category, Pakistan featured in three bouts and went down in two, winning the one against Bulgaria 10-6.
However, in the bantamweight 56-kg category, Pakistan played two bouts and won both. Defeating Nepal 22-19 and Mongolia 15-14.
