The Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, topped the overall rankings of higher education institutions in the country, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) announced on Thursday.

The primary purpose of the ranking exercise is to share comprehensive data on key issues that determine the state of higher education in a particular institution, HEC Chairman Javed Laghari said at a press conference.

This information will allow students, parents, potential employers and other stakeholders to make informed decisions, Laghari said

“It will also provide a transparent mechanism to universities on how they compare against their peers, and will inculcate a spirit of competition to raise the standard of education,” he added.

The activity will also help promote a culture of participation in world university rankings, Laghari added.

Institutions established after December 2008, as well as distance education universities, are excluded from the ranking lists, the chairman said.

Ranking criteria

The ranking model has been developed by HEC’s Quality Assurance Committee (QAC) through stakeholder participation.

The Ranking criteria for universities includes student intake as well as graduates produced at bachelors; masters and doctorate levels, number of qualified faculty members; student-teacher ratio; quality of research produced and published in journals of international repute; physical and technological infrastructure; international collaborations; resource generation and sports facilities.

According to the ranking criteria, 60% of points are awarded on academic quality and 40% on research. Academic quality includes teaching quality and implementation of the quality assurance criteria. Teaching quality is based on the student-teacher ratio, ratio of PhD faculty to total faculty, total PhD output, computers, library books and fulltime PhD faculty.
